VILLANOVA, Pa. - In exhibition men's basketball action
on Friday, Nov. 7, 1997 at the Pavilion, the Villanova Wildcats
defeated Around the World Stars by an 85-53 margin.
Five Wildcats posted double figures on the night, led by
sophomore power forward Malik Allen with 13. John Celestand
added 12, while Howard Brown had 11 and Zeffy Penn and Rafal
Bigus both contributed 10 points. Bigus also posted a
game-high 10 rebounds in the game.
The game stayed close through the first quarter, but the
Wildcats opened it up with a 17-6 run at the 8:16 mark of the
second period. The score was 41-27 at the intermission, and
the Wildcats led by as many 33 points in the contest.
Villanova limited Around the World Stars to 29.6 percent
shooting, while converting 41.4 percent from the field. The
Wildcats won the battle of the boards, 45-36, and caused 22
turnovers in the game.
Villanova utilized the NCAA's experimental four 10-minute
quarters, which will be used at several preseason tournaments.
The Villanova-Minnesota game, the second contest of The BCA
Classic's doubleheader, will be one of the experiments. The
Wildcats' season opener with the Golden Gophers is Friday, Nov.
14, 1997, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
