Head coaches Jake Moran and Joe Moran begin their 15th season leading the Villanova golf program. The last three seasons have been among the most successful for the Wildcats under the Moran brothers' watch and the team has the potential for another exciting season in 2007-08.
With a mix between two senior captains and a trio of sophomores in the lineup last season, the coaches led Villanova to a second place finish at the highly competitive Rutgers Invitational. Just a year earlier the team had come in 10th at the same event. The Wildcats also posted sixth-place finishes at Hartford's Hawks Invitational and the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate.
Villanova was led by co-captain Steve Arnold last season, as the senior led the Wildcats in scoring for the second straight year. He posted a 74.85 stroke average for the season and earned two top-10 and four top-20 finishes in tournaments. Arnold was a key figure on the 2005-06 squad that captured the program's first-ever Big 5 trophy. Villanova beat out each its city rivals at the Big 5 classic in October 2005 to claim top city honors. Arnold earned medalist honors in the field of 69 golfers with an even-par score of 142 over 36 holes. He also finished in eighth place at the BIG EAST Championships in the spring as the Wildcats finished fifth out of 12 conference teams.
The current run of success for the program began during the 2004-05 season when Villanova captured the team title at the George Washington Invite. It was the Wildcats first tournament title since the 1997 season. The Wildcats also qualified for the Big East Tournament for the first time since the field was changed to six teams in 2000.
Jake and Joe Moran arrived at Villanova in 1993-94 and that season captured their first tournament title when Villanova won the UMBC Tournament. In 1996 the Wildcats garnered second place finishes at both the Stabler Invitational and James Madison Invitational.
The Moran brothers are members of the Philadelphia Country Club and Overbrook Country Club. They are also each active members of the Villanova Alumni Association and Golf Alumni Association. The Morans are active in the local golf community as well, and Joe was the President of the Golf Association of Philadelphia from 1981-83.
Joe and his wife Patricia reside in nearby Bryn Mawr. They are the parents of six children and have 17 grandchildren. Jake and his wife Sheila live in Berwyn. The couple has three children and eight grandchildren.
