VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Villanova Wildcats, under direction of first
year head coach Joanie Milhous, opened their 1998 season with a 16-5 victory over the
LaSalle Explorers at Villanova Stadium on Wednesday, March 11th.
The Wildcats scored 13 consecutive goals en route of the 16-5
victory, led by Cockeysville, Maryland native, Meghan Doyle and Summit, N.J. native Julie
Shallcross. Doyle, a junior, finished with six points (five goals, one assist) including three
consecutive, second-half goals over a three minute span. And Shallcross, a sophomore, finished
with four points (one goal, three assists). Villanova also received multiple goal performances from
senior Maria McCusker and Monahan who each cashed in with two goals.
In the first half, Wildcat freshman Terri Overturf scored the first
goal of the season 7:19 into the contest, putting Villanova ahead for good. The Wildcats entered
the intermission with a 9-0 lead, with eight different players scoring.
The Wildcats came out firing in the second half, when junior Katie
Monahan scored just 0:12 into the half. The Wildcats jumped to a 13-0 lead before the
Explorers found a way to beat Villanova net-minder Julie Pinnix (10 saves), when LaSalle freshman
Jennifer Heigl (two goals, one assist) scored her first goal of the afternoon. The Wildcats refused
to surrender their lead and marched on to a 16-5 victory.
The Wildcats will square-off against Boston College at Villanova Stadium on Saturday, March 14th at 1pm.
